SCO Program Participants “Adopt-a-Highway”

Fifteen participants in our Day Habilitation program for adults with developmental disabilities have adopted a highway as part of Keep Islip Clean, a community-based volunteer project. Three times a week they comb Comac Street picking up litter and cleaning up the area.

Our Day Hab participants work on their communication and team building skills by working together towards a common goal. They take tremendous pride in the work they do. The response within the community has been positive, too, as neighbors honk their horns or say “thank you” in appreciation.

Planting the Seeds of Discovery

Vegetable garden helps special needs kids explore the wonders of nature

The students at the Tyree Learning Center, SCO’s school for developmentally disabled children in Sea Cliff, planted an organic vegetable garden that has opened up a whole new world to them. With the help and direction of their teacher, Jessica Daverin, and groundskeeper, Andrew “Buzzy” Mackney, the children have witnessed nature’s cycle of life firsthand as they’ve watched their garden transform from a plot of seeded soil to a flowing vegetable garden.

The children seed, water and the ultimately pick the plants that they tend to. The older children are in charge of watering the plants to ensure they grow to their full potential. They have embraced that responsibility and are proud of the contribution they make to the garden’s success. All of the kids agree that their favorite part is when they get to eat what they’ve grown.

A special pushcart makes the garden accessible to every student. The cart is filled with seeds and soil in the spring and brought to wheelchair-bound students so they can participate in every part of the gardening process – just like their peers. “The garden encompasses children with all abilities. We are able to modify how the children tend to the garden so that all can be involved,” said Ms. Daverin.

The Tyree Learning Center vegetable garden has become a great asset to the children’s educational experience. The kids had another robust harvest this fall, winning 10 ribbons at the Long Island Fair in September.
