Family Development Center
“Promoting Positive Outcomes for Children and Families”
The Family Development Center is located in three communities in Northwest Queens: Corona, Jackson Heights and Woodside, and serves over 1,000 families in crisis annually. Its mission is to support and strengthen families in the community. Our staff meet with families in crisis to assess the difficulties they face and to determine the best ways they can overcome them, utilizing a comprehensive array of programs and services the Center offers.
Family Counseling
Our Family Counseling programs are the building blocks for the development of a healthy neighborhood. We provide a comprehensive range of services to sustain and nurture the family, ensure the well being of the community’s children, and create an environment where youth can emerge as confident, capable adults. We also provide intensive help to families in recovery.
Community Service Programs
Our Community Service Program provides a variety of integrated services and activities that are available to the community daily, year round.
“Single Stop”
Single Stop provides individuals and families with professional consultation and support to address financial, legal and personal issues – all in one familiar, convenient location.
Advocacy Clinic
We assist Northwest Queens residents through benefits counseling, translation services and referrals. Our Advocacy Clinic helps individuals and families access and use government services and resolve matters related to healthcare, housing utilities, tax credits and immigration.
EITC Tax Filing, a partnership with Foodbank
Available during tax season at the Jackson Heights location, this service provides free tax filing assistance to families with dependent children with incomes of less than $40,000 per year, or individuals with incomes of less than $20,000 per year, as well as back filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit for families who were eligible for the benefit and did not file previously.
Powerful Families
Based on a national model developed by Casey Family Services, Powerful Families seeks to empower Spanish-speaking parents by providing them with information and guidance on how to use community resources that will help them attain a better quality of life for themselves and their children.
Families Building Community, a partnership with NYC Children’s Services
Family Development Center is the lead agency for Families Building Community, a group of local businesses and agencies that work directly with New York City Children Services (ACS) professionals to provide struggling families the support they need.
Early Childhood Programs
At our Corona site, SCO Family of Services offers innovative programs that give families the tools they need to successfully nurture their young children.
Baby & Me
Through the creative use of developmental playgroups, Baby & Me promotes the nurturing attachments between parents and young children that are critical to the healthy development of children. The playgroups also help forge connections between families from similar neighborhoods with the same-aged children, creating supportive networks within the community.
Parent-Child Home Program
The Parent-Child Home Program is an early literacy, school readiness and parenting program that encourages verbal interaction and educational play between parents and their preschool children. Trained Home Visitors visit families twice a week, bringing carefully selected toys and books. During each visit, they model play activities, verbal interaction and reading activities for both parents and children.
Suffolk County Preventive Program
SCO serves over 100 at-risk families throughout Suffolk County – enhancing their capacity to provide for themselves and to acquire the skills, resources and support that will lead to more productive and fulfilling lives. We help families obtain housing and medical insurance and assist them in finding daycare and other supportive social services. Our staff makes home visits to see that children are safe and well-cared for in order to prevent the need for foster care placement in the future. The foundation of these services is SCO’s belief in families and communities.
